First Day of School!

How did this happen? How did my baby become old enough to go to Kindergarten?!
I'm really excited for him, and he is so ready. Now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do all day. I need to find some new hobbies. Is napping considered a hobby?

Disney

Way back in November we took a trip to Disney World. We had the most amazing time. The weather was in the mid 80's, there were no crowds and Nicholas was the perfect age. I always thought that people who went every year or so were crazy...I have now seem the light! I just wish my wallet had the same enthusiasm as I did.

Birthday

This past weekend has been fabulous. And believe me I needed a little fabulous in my life (who doesn't?) My boys and I started off the festivities with dinner out then skating. Watching Nick getting the hang of rolling was hilarious. The big eyed worried faces he made had me giggling. Saturday I woke up early to look for antiques. Not much luck on that front. However, it makes my heart happy when it's warm out and I see yard sale signs. We ended the weekend with fishing and cake. And Nick caught his first fish! He had no problem holding his prize. (For the record gross!) Although, on the way home he did complain about the fishy smell on his hands. This year is the first year I actually feel older. I have aches in places I never knew existed.

My baby is 5!

I know, I know I haven't blogged in months. And he turned 5 in January but the good news is that I found the cord for my camera so I will post more...bad news my Hubby has the camera in North Carolina. So new pictures will have to wait. In the meantime here is a picture of my favorite boys.

Super Kitty

The other day my son came to me held up his Baby Kitty and said, "Poor Baby Kitty wants to be a superhero like Mama Kitty!"
So I found an old red cloth napkin and started to sew. The first cape I was told looked too much like a Boy Scout. I tried again and this time he approved. I was so into it that I even added a little flare to Mama Kitty's cape. (Daddy Kitty would be our actual orange cat Seamus)
Look up in the sky, its a bird it's a plane ...it's Super Kitty.

Weekend Fun

Saturday I was able to spend a few hours with my mom and go to a gigantic flea market. I saw these Pyrex Refrigerator Dishes and the man was asking 6 dollars for it. At first I thought he meant a piece but he said the whole set!! They are faded but I have been looking for a set and I'm exited to use them. I also found juice glasses and a pitcher set for 2 dollars. And a table runner for Christmas.
We had two parties this weekend (Yes that's me chasing Nick in a bumper car)
And Sunday evening we were invited to a private party at a local Moon Bounce place to help decorate the party room. Nick and I had fun making giant hand flowers. I even managed to get some Christmas presents finished (I'll show you them soon:)

Swap Shop Finds

A friend told me about our local swap shop. Over the past few weeks I have found some really wonderful treasures.

I LOVE these.

Hubby got a kick out of this 1977 Digital Computer Kit
Milk Glass is always good. The soap dish looks cute in my bathroom.

And Strawberry Shortcake figurines.

Dinosaur power!

I am not good at sewing. My friend gave me a hand held sewing thingy for Christmas and I have been too scared to use it. I finally got up the nerve and since I like a challenge I decided to make something for my friends daughter who loves dinosaurs. Good golly Miss Molly was it ever hard!!! I saw the design in a book and altered it here and there. I'm almost done I just need to hand sew it shut. (That will only take me a week ;)

While I was making my masterpiece Nick was working on his. We have been talking about Dinosaurs this week and I got this cute little guy at Micheals. So today we are making it a Dinosaur Day. Nick will dress up in his Dino outfit and we will watch The Land Before Time, and eat dinosaur shaped nuggets! :)

Terrarium

For our family home evening this week we talked about the things God created. I saw how to build a terrarium in a magazine and decided to give it a try. I found this tall glass vase at the thrift store for two dollars and the cute bunny in my cupboard both worked nicely.

Here's how to build your own.

You need:

  1. Gravel or small stone
  2. Clear container
  3. Activated charcoal (the kind for aquarium filters)
  4. Paper (for a funnel)
  5. Fresh potting soil
  6. Small succulent plants
  7. Ceramic figurine

Step 1- Add gravel as first layer of drainage system. Carefully spread out a 1 1/2" layer of activated charcoal over gravel.

Step 2- Using the paper as a funnel, add a layer of potting soil. Choose small plants like succulents. (Cacti and Jade I used Aloe)

Step 3- Add 3- 4 ounces of water to get started. Add stones as a pathway and a ceramic figurine.

That's what I get

I told myself I wasn't going to go in, because every time I do I get yelled at.
Do you think I listened to myself...no, of course not. Against my better judgment I went to a thrift shop near my house that I try to avoid. (They really do have great things.) Today I found a very dirty silver bowl for only a dollar!

The only problem was that it had permanent marker on the bottom that gave the price. I also noticed that LOTS of other vintage pieces are marked this way.

I decided to ask the person at the desk why. She stared at me then stated, "People steal things from here all of the time!"
My head yelled don't say it...don't say it...however my mouth never got the message.
"So how does using permanent makers on antiques stop people from stealing?"
I'm telling you ladies if looks could kill I'd be six feet under.
"Are you going to by that or not!" was her growling reply.
I handed her my dollar and ran for the hills.
So a little Tarn-x and some elbow greese and I have a shiny new Reed & Barton Silver Ice cream bowl. Any suggestions on how to get the marker off?

Weekly Outing

We love to go to our local produce farm weekly. Nick can hang at the play area, pet animals and I get to shop for yummy fruit and veggies.

Plus I was able to use my new Milk Glass fruit bowl that I found at Goodwill for two dollars.
